Federal Judge Orders Release of Detained Boy and Father Amid Immigration Raid
A US District Judge in Texas has ruled that the detention of a five-year-old boy and his father by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers during an immigration raid in Minnesota was illegal. The decision came after an outcry over their detention, which sparked widespread protests and demonstrations across the country.
According to the court ruling, the case originated from “ill-conceived and incompetently-implemented” deportation quotas. The judge’s opinion condemned the use of such quotas, stating that they led to the traumatization of children like Liam Conejo Ramos.
Liam was taken into custody by ICE officers in a suburb of Minneapolis on January 20, along with his father. The boy was reportedly wearing a blue bunny hat and Spider-Man backpack when he was detained. His detention has been widely criticized, with some officials claiming that the tactic used to apprehend him was “baiting” other family members.
The judge’s ruling also highlighted the deplorable conditions at a facility in Texas where the boy and his father were being held. Advocacy groups and politicians have reported cases of illnesses, malnourishment, and other health issues among detained children.
The court decision did not specify the exact deportation quota that led to Liam’s detention. However, it is known that there was a target of 3,000 immigration arrests per day during the ongoing crackdown in Minnesota. The operation has sparked nationwide protests and demonstrations, with some officials defending ICE’s tactics as necessary for law enforcement.
The judge’s opinion also included a photo of Liam, along with several Bible quotes. The ruling made clear that the government’s actions were “perfidious” and “imposed cruelty” on certain individuals.
