Flamengos Copa Libertadores Match Abandoned Due to Crowd Disturbances

Independiente Medellin’s Copa Libertadores match against Flamengo of Brazil was abandoned due to crowd disturbances.

A match between Independiente Medellin, hosted by Colombia, and Flamengo, representing Brazil, took place at the Atanasio Girardot stadium in Medellin on Thursday. The game was interrupted twice before being called off.

The referee halted play shortly after kickoff following an incident involving fans setting off flares and lighting fires in the stands. Authorities subsequently ordered the evacuation of spectators from the stadium. CONMEBOL, the regional governing body overseeing the match, announced that the Group A encounter had been terminated.

According to reports, some fans, including those wearing face masks, were protesting against Independiente Medellin’s management and ownership. The sporting director of Flamengo, Jose Boto, requested that CONMEBOL award the visiting team three points, citing the home team’s inability to ensure stadium safety.
