Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has acknowledged that the state’s “Alligator Alcatraz” immigration detention center may wind down its operations. The facility, which is located in a former prison in Gadsden County, has been used to detain migrants and asylum seekers since 2021.
According to reports, federal and state officials have discussed the possibility of closing the center. Trump administration officials are also said to be considering the same option.
DeSantis stated that the detention center was always intended to be a temporary facility. He expressed his support for shutting down the center, saying it would be “great” to do so.
The Alligator Alcatraz detention center has been the subject of controversy and criticism from human rights groups and some lawmakers. The facility has held thousands of migrants and asylum seekers, many of whom have been detained for extended periods without access to adequate medical care or legal representation.
DeSantis’ comments on the potential closure of the facility come as the Biden administration continues to grapple with the issue of migrant detention and deportation policies.
