US Military Forces Capture Venezuelan President and His Wife
In a dramatic operation on Saturday, US military forces carried out a strike in Venezuela that resulted in the capture and removal of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The pair were flown to New York and are currently in federal custody.
Maduro appeared in federal court on charges related to drug trafficking and weapons possession, and pleaded not guilty. Several governments, international legal experts, and UN officials have described the operation as an illegal “kidnapping” and a breach of international law.
The US government has justified the operation primarily by citing concerns over Venezuela’s oil reserves, but a closer examination reveals that domestic political incentives played a significant role in the decision-making process. The state of Florida, with its 31 electoral votes, is a pivotal state in presidential elections, where narrow margins can determine national outcomes.
According to data, US crude imports from Venezuela have dwindled significantly since 2024, representing less than 4% of total US crude imports. In contrast, imports from Canada dominate the market, accounting for around 60-63% of US crude import needs. The composition of Venezuelan oil also makes it less desirable due to its heavy and sour nature.
US officials have cited drug trafficking as a justification for the operation, but research suggests that Venezuela is not a major source of cocaine entering the US. Instead, the majority of drugs are produced and trafficked through Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
The capture of Maduro has had a modest impact on global oil prices, suggesting that oil was not the primary driver of the operation. A more persuasive explanation for the US government’s actions lies in the domestic political incentives shaping its foreign policy, particularly the influence of Florida’s electorate and elite networks.
