Former Soccer Star Diego Maradonas Childhood Home Becomes Soup Kitchen

A Soup Kitchen Opens at Maradona’s Childhood Home in Buenos Aires

In a suburb of Buenos Aires, where Argentine football legend Diego Maradona grew up in poverty, a soup kitchen has been established at his childhood home. The facility, located on 523 Amazor street in Fiorito, provides meals and clothing assistance to those affected by President Javier Milei’s austerity measures.

The neighborhood, which is home to approximately 50,000 residents, features numerous murals commemorating Maradona’s career. Locals gather at the soup kitchen, carrying containers filled with food prepared by volunteers. The facility operates without dining accommodations, with volunteers cooking over open fires in the yard and distributing meals in bags.

The soup kitchen was established after President Milei implemented radical free-market reforms following his election in December 2023. Many residents, including Diego Gavilan, who benefits from the services, have reported struggling to make ends meet despite a reduction in poverty rates. According to Central Bank reports, family finances remain in crisis due to increased imports and plummeting consumption.

The soup kitchen’s operation is a testament to Maradona’s legacy of compassion. Volunteers prepare food over open fires in the yard, distributing it to those waiting at the entrance. Maria Torres, one of the centre’s cooks, believes that Maradona would approve of his childhood home being repurposed for charitable purposes.

The facility serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by many residents in Fiorito, where hardship remains visible on the faces of those queuing for food.
