Former Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero Under Investigation for Corruption Allegations

Former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is under investigation in Spain for alleged influence peddling and related crimes, according to a statement released by the High Court on Tuesday. The court confirmed that searches were conducted at Zapatero’s office in Madrid, as well as three other premises, and that he has been summoned to testify on June 2.

The investigation centers around the 2021 state rescue of Plus Ultra airline, which received 53 million euros ($62m) from the state holding company SEPI during the COVID-19 pandemic. The case involves several individuals, including businessman Julio Martinez Martinez, known as Julito, who is considered key to understanding the links between Plus Ultra and Zapatero.

Zapatero is accused of having played a role in the airline’s bailout and is alleged to have pressed the Ministry of Transport to approve the rescue. Suspicion also centers on Analisis Relevante, Julito’s company, which allegedly received 10 million euros ($12m) from Zapatero. The court is examining whether the aid was properly approved and whether any improper lobbying or influence was involved.

The investigation has sparked controversy, with some politicians expressing surprise at the scope of the inquiry. Juanma Moreno, president of the Andalusian regional government, stated that “there has never been a serious investigation process” in such cases before. The conservative opposition People’s Party has used the case to criticize Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his administration.

Zapatero has denied wrongdoing in previous statements. He served as prime minister from 2004 to 2011 and has maintained business and political ties with Venezuela since leaving office.
