Former UK Health Minister Announces Bid for Labour Party Leadership Position

Former UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting Announces Leadership Bid

Wes Streeting, the former British health secretary who resigned from the government this week, has confirmed that he will run for the Labour party leadership when the contest is triggered. Streeting’s announcement comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces growing pressure to step down following a series of local election losses.

Streeting stated that he intends to participate in the formal leadership challenge process and become the centre-left Labour party’s new leader. As the current health secretary, Streeting has urged Starmer to set a timetable for his departure.

In recent days, Streeting has expressed support for Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, who is seen as a top contender to replace Starmer as Labour leader. Streeting stated that Burnham is “one of our best players” and that he would be the best chance of winning the leadership contest.

The Labour party has been plagued by controversy over recent appointments, including the nomination of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington. Additionally, there have been calls for Starmer’s resignation from over 80 MPs in parliament.

Labour MP Josh Simons recently resigned from his seat in Makerfield to make way for Burnham to seek election to parliament. The party has agreed to allow Burnham to seek re-election, which will be held next month at the earliest. If successful, Burnham would need to gather support from 81 Labour MPs or 20% of the party in parliament to launch a challenge against Starmer.

Another potential challenger, Angela Rayner, has also announced that tax authorities have cleared her of wrongdoing following an investigation into her tax affairs.
