Former Ukrainian Energy Minister Detained by Anti-Corruption Bureau
Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has detained German Galushchenko, the country’s former energy minister, as he attempted to leave the country. According to NABU, detectives apprehended Galushchenko while crossing the state border as part of an ongoing investigation into the “Midas” case.
Galushchenko served as Ukraine’s energy minister last year and resigned in November amid a corruption scandal. The NABU statement did not name Galushchenko but mentioned that he was one of several ministers who stepped down following the discovery of alleged money laundering in the country’s energy sector.
The Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) claims that businessman Timur Mindich orchestrated the $100m scheme, with Galushchenko allegedly helping to manage illicit financial flows. Contractors working with Energoatom were reportedly forced to pay bribes of 10-15% to secure contracts or avoid payment delays.
The investigation is ongoing, and initial proceedings are being carried out in accordance with the law and court sanctions. The NABU has not provided further details at this time. This case is part of Ukraine’s efforts to combat corruption, a key priority in its reform agenda as it pursues membership in the European Union.
