Four killed in shooting by Cuban border agents near Florida

Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior Issues Statement Regarding Incident Involving US Speedboat

The Cuban Ministry of the Interior has released a statement confirming that its border patrol forces engaged in a shootout with a speedboat from the United States, resulting in the deaths of four people. According to the ministry, the speedboat was identified as having a license plate from the state of Florida, approximately 145 kilometers from the island.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning off the coast of Cayo Falcones in the north-central Villa Clara province. The Cuban government stated that the crew of the violating speedboat opened fire first, leading to an exchange of gunfire. As a result, six people were injured, including the commander of the Cuban vessel.

The ministry has framed the border patrol’s actions as part of its efforts to protect Cuba’s territorial waters and national sovereignty. A statement released by the ministry reads: “In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar of the Cuban State in safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region.”

This incident marks the latest example of a confrontation between Cuba and US boats entering its territory. The situation has been further complicated by heightened tensions between the two countries over the past two months.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and more details are expected to be released as the situation develops.
