France proposes mediating Lebanon and Israel peace negotiations

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that Paris is prepared to mediate a truce between Lebanon and Israel. This comes amid ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces have been conducting air raids and ground operations, resulting in significant loss of life and displacement.
According to reports, the Lebanese government has expressed willingness to engage in direct talks with Israel, with all segments of the country to be represented. Macron stated that France is ready to facilitate these discussions by hosting them in Paris, urging both parties to seize the opportunity for a ceasefire and to halt their respective escalations.
The situation on the ground remains fluid, with reports suggesting that Israeli forces are preparing for a potential major ground invasion in southern Lebanon. Israel has issued evacuation orders for all residents south of the Litani River and has been conducting airstrikes against targets in Lebanon since the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon, had not responded to near-daily attacks carried out by Israel since the November 2024 ceasefire. The Lebanese government has taken steps to restrict Hezbollah’s military activities and limit its role in public life.
France has reportedly drafted a proposal for peace talks between Lebanon and Israel, which would require the Lebanese government to recognize Israel in exchange for an end to the conflict. However, details of this plan remain unclear, and it is not clear whether all parties are on board with the proposal.
Talks could potentially begin soon, either in Cyprus or Paris, according to reports. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has denied any plans to host talks in Paris, but a source familiar with French efforts confirms that such discussions are underway.
