French Presidential Candidate Announces Fourth Bid
Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of France’s Unbowed party, has confirmed his intention to run for president in next year’s election. This will be Melenchon’s fourth presidential bid, following previous attempts in 2012, 2017, and 2022.
Melenchon’s announcement comes as President Emmanuel Macron is term-limited and unable to seek re-election. Marine Le Pen, a far-right leader, faces a potential ban from politics after challenging the ruling in court.
According to recent polls, Melenchon has seen an increase in his share of the vote with each campaign. In 2012, he received 11% support, while in 2022, he came close to securing a run-off spot, winning 22% of the vote and trailing Le Pen by just 1.2 percentage points.
Melenchon’s Unbowed party has been vocal on several issues, including its criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which it describes as genocide. The party also supports stronger environmental regulations and higher taxes on the rich.
The 2027 presidential election is scheduled to take place in April, with a potential run-off two weeks later if no candidate secures a majority in the first round. With Macron out of the running and Le Pen facing uncertainty over her eligibility to participate, the field for the election appears to be wide open.
