Gaza Journalist Killed on Day Daughter Was Born

Gaza City, Gaza Strip – May 7, 2025: A Local Woman’s Birthday Marks a Tragic Loss

Amal Sobeih gave birth to her third child, a daughter named Sana, on May 7, 2025. The day also marked the death of her husband, Yahya Sobaih, who was killed in an Israeli air strike just five hours after his daughter’s birth. According to Amal, doctors advised her to undergo an emergency caesarean section, and the delivery proceeded smoothly. However, Yahya did not survive the attack.

Prior to his death, Yahya spent several hours with his wife and newborn daughter, taking photos and welcoming relatives who had come to congratulate him. He also checked on their two sons at home and planned to return soon to choose a name for Sana. Amal recalls that her husband was in high spirits, carrying his daughter and reciting the Islamic call to prayer into her ears.

The news of Yahya’s death spread slowly among family members and medical staff, who were hesitant to inform Amal due to her fragile physical and emotional state after delivery. She only discovered the truth through online reports, which revealed that Yahya had been killed while distributing sweets to relatives and friends in celebration of his daughter’s birth.

Among those killed with Yahya was his cousin, closest friend, and brother-in-law – individuals who had visited the hospital earlier that day to congratulate him on the arrival of his new baby. Amal expressed her shock and grief at losing not only her husband but also being unable to say goodbye in person. This incident marks the latest loss for Amal, who has already experienced the death of several family members during the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
