Gaza Stockpiles Amid Escalating Tensions With Iran Over Border Closures

Gaza Residents Stockpile Food Amid Israel-US War with Iran

Residents of Deir el-Balah in Gaza City gathered at local markets on Saturday morning, sparking concerns about food shortages. Hani Abu Issa, a father of five, reported that he had only intended to purchase ingredients for his family’s Ramadan iftar meal but was surprised by the crowds gathering outside grocery shops.

The Israel-US military confrontation with Iran led to the closure of crossings leading to Gaza and the occupied West Bank “until further notice,” according to COGAT. This announcement prompted widespread panic buying, with residents rushing to stockpile essential goods such as flour, sugar, cooking oil, and yeast.

Shelves began to empty, and prices for these items increased. Hani expressed concern about the potential impact on Gaza’s food supply, stating that he believes the war will not directly affect the enclave but acknowledged that people are no longer able to react calmly to military developments in the region.

The closure of crossings has raised anxiety among residents, with many fearing a repeat of the severe malnutrition and famine experienced during Israel’s 2014 conflict. Local sources reported that the closures were linked to the Jewish holiday of Purim, which created confusion over their duration.

Hani emphasized the need for reassurance from authorities about the closure’s duration, stating that stockpiling is not a viable solution due to the rapid depletion of goods and potential spoilage. He expressed frustration with Israel’s policy, saying, “We cannot be certain or confirm anything. Israel’s word cannot be relied upon.”

The situation in Gaza has been marked by previous shortages and price hikes during the 2014 conflict, resulting in widespread condemnation of Israel’s policy of starvation.
