Gaza’s Power Grid Collapses Amid Ongoing Conflict
The power grid in Gaza has been severely damaged, leaving families reliant on generators and private charging points. Abdel Karim Salman, a 28-year-old former civil engineer, is among those struggling to access basic necessities like electricity.
Salman was displaced from his home in northern Gaza with his family in October 2023, following the destruction of his residence during Israel’s military operation in the region. His family now resides in a tent in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah, where they face daily challenges due to the lack of electricity.
To cope with the situation, Salman uses his mobile phone and his wife’s phone as makeshift torches to light their living space at night. However, this solution comes with a significant cost, as he must walk 150-200 meters twice a day to reach a charging point, paying between two and four shekels ($0.65 to $1.30) per session.
The shortage of electricity has had far-reaching consequences for families in Gaza, including the inability to store food or use refrigerators. Salman’s family is among those who have been affected by this crisis, with his children being particularly vulnerable due to their age.
The situation is exacerbated by the high cost of alternative solutions, such as solar-powered lamps and generator-based electricity systems. These options are unaffordable for many residents, including Salman, who lost his job soon after the war began.
As a result, families in Gaza continue to face significant challenges, with the power cuts affecting every aspect of their daily lives. The situation remains dire, with many struggling to access basic necessities like electricity and clean water.
