Gaza Struggles with Skin Infections Amidst Crowding and Sanitation Issues
A growing health crisis is unfolding in Gaza, where skin diseases are spreading rapidly among crowded camps. The United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has reported a significant increase in skin infections, particularly among children, due to rising temperatures, overcrowding, and poor sanitation.
According to UN officials, the number of skin infections has tripled in recent months. Health workers are working to contain the spread of diseases such as scabies and chickenpox, but face challenges due to shortages of medical equipment and supplies. The Israeli blockade on Gaza has severely limited the importation of essential medical materials, exacerbating the situation.
In one of Gaza’s refugee camps, a displaced Palestinian described the dire living conditions: “We’re crammed on top of each other… We came here to live on top of a garbage dump.” Health officials are struggling to provide adequate care due to the lack of supplies. In response, some families are resorting to homemade remedies.
The situation is being closely monitored by UN officials, who have urged greater access for essential medical materials. “Teams on the ground say that pests and skin infections among people in Gaza are still on the rise,” said a UN spokesperson. The crisis has already affected over 10,000 people, with cases of scabies, chickenpox, and other diseases reported.
Health workers in southern Gaza are working to disinfect thousands of tents to minimize the spread of infections. However, shortages of pesticides and insecticides have hindered their efforts. “We’re struggling with our inability to provide the necessary materials for the work,” said a spokesperson for the Khan Younis municipality.
