Gazas Traumatized Children Find Solace in Yoga Classes

Gaza City, Gaza - A local teacher has established a yoga program for children in northern Gaza, aiming to provide them with moments of peace amidst the ongoing conflict.

The initiative, led by Hadeel al-Gharbawi, involves transforming a tent into a space for yoga classes. Al-Gharbawi sought to expand her existing activities for children beyond drawing and coloring, and discovered that yoga could help them cope with trauma. She learned the practice online and began teaching it to the children.

The program offers a unique combination of physical exercise and breathing techniques, allowing children to release stress and find calm in their daily lives. Participants report feeling safe and happy during the classes, which provide a brief respite from the hardships of living in Gaza.

According to reports by the World Health Organization, children in Gaza have been exposed to prolonged cycles of violence and trauma, affecting their mental health. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that the conflict will have a lasting impact on the region’s children.

The yoga program is part of a broader effort to provide educational and recreational activities for children in Gaza. Al-Gharbawi aims to activate the children’s imaginations through these programs, which she believes help them deal with trauma and regain a sense of normalcy.

The classes are held in a tent, where children sit cross-legged on mats and follow the teacher’s instructions. Some participate enthusiastically, while others observe quietly. The program is designed to provide a safe space for children to express themselves and find joy amidst the challenges of living in Gaza.
