Gazas Women Honored for Refusing to Be Ignored by World

Gaza Journalists Pay Heavy Price for Reporting on Israeli Occupation

As International Women’s Day is observed globally, attention is being drawn to the plight of women journalists in Gaza who have risked their lives to report on the Israeli occupation. According to recent statistics, more than 20 out of 270 journalists and media workers killed by Israel were women.

Mariam Abu Daqqa, a field correspondent for years, was targeted by the Israeli army along with other journalists at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis in August. She had previously documented the suffering of Palestinians under siege and reported on the realities of the conflict.

Fatima Hassouna, another prominent photojournalist, was assassinated by the Israeli occupation four months prior to Mariam’s death. Her family, including six members, were killed in a bombing at her home in northern Gaza just days after it was announced that a documentary film about her would be featured at an independent film festival in Cannes.

The Israeli occupation has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian women and girls over the past two and a half years. The lives of one million Palestinians have been devastated by the conflict.

Women journalists in Gaza continue to report on the war, despite the risks. They document atrocities, interview mourners, and write about the human impact of the occupation. Despite facing fear, pain, and exhaustion, they persist in their work.

The mass targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists has left deep psychological scars among those who have survived. Women journalists speak quietly about their experiences, but their bravery is undeniable. The Israeli occupation’s actions against them are a stark reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones.
