GCC Secretary-General Calls for UN Action on Iranian Attacks
The United Nations Security Council was addressed by Jassim al-Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), who urged the council to take immediate action to halt ongoing attacks across the region attributed to Iran. Al-Budaiwi described these actions as a “flagrant violation” of international law and the UN Charter.
During his address, al-Budaiwi requested that the UNSC take all necessary measures to protect maritime corridors and ensure uninterrupted navigation through strategic waterways in the region. He also emphasized the importance of including the six GCC states – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates – in any talks or agreements with Iran.
The GCC Secretary-General reiterated the need for immediate action to halt these attacks, restore security and stability, and ensure the safety of air and maritime navigation. He also highlighted the importance of protecting global energy markets and international supply chains.
Iran has been conducting daily missile and drone attacks across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a war against the country on February 28. These attacks have targeted civilian sites in several Gulf countries, including critical energy facilities. Iran has also effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway that transports about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquified natural gas supplies.
Frustrations are growing across the GCC as the conflict with Iran continues. According to Al Jazeera, 85 percent of projectiles fired by Iran have targeted Gulf countries, with the UAE being the hardest hit. The GCC is seeking an immediate end to the conflict and is focusing on bringing this to a close as soon as possible.
