Georgias Primary Election Looms Over Senate Republican Contests

Georgia Holds Primary Elections Ahead of Midterm Elections

On Tuesday, voters in the southern state of Georgia will cast their ballots in primary elections that will determine the candidates for the 2024 midterm elections. The contests are expected to draw significant attention, particularly among Republicans seeking to challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff and Democrats vying for the governor’s seat.

Ossoff, the incumbent Democrat, has secured his party’s nomination and is likely to be the Democratic candidate in the general election. In contrast, the Republican field is more crowded, with five candidates competing for the chance to face Ossoff in November. The contenders include two sitting members of the US House of Representatives: Buddy Carter and Mike Collins.

Both Carter and Collins have maintained a strong connection to former President Donald Trump, focusing their campaigns on demonstrating loyalty to the president. Trump has not yet endorsed any candidate in the race. Collins leads in fundraising and endorsements but is currently embroiled in an ethics probe related to his alleged misuse of congressional funds.

Other Republican candidates include outgoing Governor Brian Kemp’s endorsement of college football coach Derek Dooley, as well as businessman John Coyne and former US Army General Jonathan McColumn. If McColumn wins the general election, he would become only the second Black Republican in the Senate.

In the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Keisha Lance Bottoms is currently leading a crowded field. As the former mayor of Atlanta and a staffer in the administration of President Joe Biden, she has positioned herself as a moderate alternative to some of her opponents. Her challengers include former DeKalb County executive Michael Thurmond and Georgia’s former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan.

The Democratic primary also features state Senator Jason Esteves, who is running on the progressive side. With Governor Kemp facing term limits, this election represents an opportunity for Democrats to potentially flip the governor’s office, which has been held by Republicans since 2003.
