Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has expressed confidence in European teams ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. In an interview published by Die Zeit newspaper on Wednesday, Goretzka stated that he believes Germany and other European nations will be among the favourites to win the tournament.
Goretzka noted that while other countries have made significant progress in football, Europe remains at the forefront. “Others have caught up, but in the most important game in the world, we’re still ahead of every continent,” he said.
The World Cup, which is being hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, has drawn attention due to concerns over its organization. Some individuals, including Oke Gottlich, president of Bundesliga club St Pauli, have suggested considering a boycott of the tournament.
Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter also weighed in on the issue, citing comments made by Mark Pieth, a Swiss lawyer and anti-corruption expert. Pieth had initially called for fans to boycott the World Cup due to concerns over its organization.
Goretzka acknowledged the political debates surrounding the tournament but expressed his expectation that it will be a successful event. “I’m aware of the discussions,” he said. “Still, I expect it to be a great tournament. It will advance football there and convince many people that it’s a fantastic game.”
Germany has been drawn into World Cup Group E with Ivory Coast, Curacao, and Ecuador.
