Germany expresses concern over Israeli plan for extended Gaza control

German Government Expresses Concern Over Israeli Plans for Gaza

The German government has issued a statement expressing its opposition to any permanent division of Gaza, following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s order to increase control over the enclave to 70 percent. The move comes as Israel continues to expand its military presence in the territory, despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by regional countries and the United States.

In October, Israel agreed to withdraw its troops behind an artificial border, leaving it occupying approximately 53 percent of Gaza. However, since then, Israeli forces have steadily expanded their control, raising concerns among Palestinians that Israel aims to permanently annex large parts of the enclave.

The German Foreign Office spokesperson stated that Berlin opposes any permanent division of Gaza, citing concerns for the welfare of the territory’s 2.3 million residents. Germany is one of Israel’s closest allies and its second-largest weapons supplier after the US.

Netanyahu has suggested that Israel may seize more than 70 percent of Gaza, stating that he has ordered the military to increase control to 70 percent. The Israeli government has also proposed encouraging “voluntary emigration” among Palestinians, a move criticized by critics as a euphemism for forced displacement.

The United Nations and European Union have reported on the devastating impact of Israel’s war on Gaza, estimating that over $70 billion is needed for recovery and reconstruction over the next decade. The report highlights the catastrophic effects of the conflict on human development, including the destruction of hospitals and schools.

In a recent statement, Netanyahu acknowledged his plan to increase control in Gaza, stating that he will “press them [Hamas] from all sides.” Israel has also reported killing a senior Hamas commander in a strike in Gaza earlier this week.
