German Football Federation Rules Out Boycott of 2026 World Cup
The German Football Federation (DFB) has confirmed that it met to discuss a potential boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is co-hosted by the United States. However, the federation has stated that a boycott is not currently under consideration.
According to a statement issued on Friday, the DFB’s executive committee discussed the option of boycotting the tournament in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The decision was first proposed by DFB Vice President Oke Gottlich, who also serves as president of Bundesliga club St Pauli. Gottlich had suggested that the boycott be considered due to recent actions taken by US President Donald Trump.
The DFB has stated that its goal is to strengthen the positive impact of sport globally and not prevent it from happening. The federation is in contact with representatives from various fields, including politics, security, business, and sports, as part of preparations for the tournament.
In a statement, the DFB emphasized that debates on sports policy should be conducted internally and not publicly. The organization has also expressed its intention to compete fairly against other qualified teams at the 2026 World Cup and to celebrate a peaceful festival of football with fans worldwide.
The DFB’s decision comes amid concerns about high ticket prices and travel bans imposed by the Trump administration, which could affect supporters from competing nations. However, Germany’s national team has confirmed its participation in the tournament.
