Germanys Merz Downplays Rift with US Amid Troop Reduction Plans

US and German Leaders Clash Over Troop Withdrawal

Washington has issued a statement expressing concern over comments made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding US actions in Iran. The remarks, made during an interview with broadcaster ARD, were seen as critical of President Donald Trump’s strategy in the region.

Merz stated that the US plans to withdraw troops from Germany have “no connection” to his criticisms of Trump’s approach in Iran. However, the US has responded by scolding Merz, with Trump calling him “out of touch” and threatening to withdraw American soldiers.

The comments sparked a reaction from Washington, which announced plans to reduce the number of US troops in Germany over the next 12 months. The move is expected to cut the number of US troops in the country by around 14 percent.

Germany hosts the largest number of US troops in Europe, with approximately 36,000 soldiers stationed there. The decision has been made despite Germany’s close alliance with the US and Israel, which has provided significant military support to both countries.

The US has also announced increased tariffs on cars and trucks from the European Union, which produces a significant portion of its exports to Germany. The move is seen as a response to EU criticism of US actions in Iran.

NATO officials have confirmed that they are working with the US to understand the details of their decision. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has stated that the US-Europe relationship is important, but also emphasized the need for Europeans to take on more responsibility for their own security.
