Multiple Lawsuits Challenge Tennessee’s New US House Map
Several lawsuits have been filed in response to the newly redrawn US House map in Tennessee. The map, which was created by the Republican-controlled state legislature, has been challenged by two separate lawsuits.
One lawsuit, filed by the NAACP Tennessee, alleges that the new map unfairly dilutes the voting power of African American voters in the state’s majority black district. The other lawsuit, filed by Axios, claims that the map is unconstitutional due to its partisan gerrymandering.
In a statement, a Tennessee lawmaker called for the city of Memphis to secede from the state over the redistricting process. However, this move has not been officially announced or implemented.
A special session of the state legislature was convened to reshape Tennessee’s congressional districts. The new map will take effect in time for the 2024 elections.
The lawsuits and the redistricting process have sparked controversy in the state, with some arguing that the changes are an attempt to suppress minority voting power. Others argue that the map is necessary to ensure fair representation of all voters.
Multiple parties involved in the lawsuit have yet to comment on the matter.
