Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated that her country is prepared to defend its values in the face of renewed threats from US President Donald Trump regarding the seizure of Greenland by force. Ahead of meetings with US officials in Washington, DC, Frederiksen emphasized that a conflict over Greenland’s future is underway.
Frederiksen described the situation as a “decisive moment” and stated that Denmark will defend its values wherever necessary. She also expressed support for international law and peoples’ right to self-determination.
Several European countries have expressed their opposition to Trump’s claims, including Germany and Sweden. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the US’s “threatening rhetoric,” while German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann Wadehpul reiterated his country’s support for Denmark and Greenland.
The United Kingdom has also been involved in discussions regarding a possible NATO mission in Greenland. UK officials have begun talks with other European countries on plans that could involve deploying troops, warships, and aircraft to protect the territory from potential threats.
NATO officials have expressed interest in addressing US security concerns in the Arctic region. Belgian Minister of Defence Theo Francken suggested that NATO launch an operation in the Arctic to address these concerns.
Trump has claimed that controlling Greenland is crucial for US national security due to rising Russian and Chinese military activity in the region. However, polls indicate that Greenland’s population strongly opposes a US takeover.
