Guinea holds historic polls after 2021 military coup

Guinea Holds Presidential Election Amid Controversy

A presidential election is underway in Guinea, with incumbent military leader General Mamady Doumbouya widely expected to secure victory. The election, which began on Sunday and will close at 18:00 GMT, has been marked by controversy over restrictions on the media and opposition parties.

Sixty-seven million registered voters are eligible to participate in the election, which features eight candidates, including Doumbouya. Ousted President Alpha Conde and longtime opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo remain in exile. The opposition has called for a boycott of the vote, citing concerns over poverty and lack of democratic freedoms.

Guinea’s democratic transition began with the November 2010 election of Alpha Conde, who became the country’s first freely elected president. However, Doumbouya overthrew him in September 2021, leading to a return to authoritarian rule. The opposition has accused Doumbouya’s government of restricting press freedom and curbing protests.

Provisional results are expected within two days, according to Djenabou Toure, head of the General Directorate of Elections. Political debate has been muted under Doumbouya, with civil society groups accusing his government of intimidation and constraints on media freedom.

The new constitution, approved in a referendum last month, allows military leaders to stand for election, paving the way for Doumbouya’s candidacy. The document also lengthens presidential terms from five to seven years, renewable once. Guinea is rich in natural resources, including bauxite and iron ore, which has boosted Doumbouya’s popularity among young voters.

The campaign period has been marked by restrictions on opposition activity, with some accusing the government of enforced disappearances and intimidation. The United Nations has expressed concerns over the credibility of the electoral process due to these conditions.
