Breaking News: Gunfire Reported Near Guinea’s Central Prison in Conakry
Reports of sustained gunshots have emerged near the central prison in Guinea’s capital, Conakry. According to media sources, gunfire was heard on Tuesday morning, but the identity of those involved and the trigger for the shooting remain unclear.
Eyewitnesses claim that military pickup trucks carrying armed security forces and a machine gun-mounted armoured carrier were seen deployed around the Kaloum administrative district, where the prison is located. The presidential palace is also situated in Kaloum.
A security detail composed of police officers and special forces blocked access to the road leading to the prison on Tuesday morning. An armoured vehicle belonging to the special forces was visible outside the prison.
Witnesses reported hearing automatic gunfire, with one resident stating they heard shots while driving past the prison during a traffic jam. Another witness claimed to have heard gunfire inside the facility, but noted that the situation has since calmed down.
The duration and circumstances of the shooting are currently unknown. Authorities have not issued an immediate statement on the matter.
