Yemen’s Houthi Rebels Claim Attack on Israel with Iranian and Hezbollah Support
Houthi rebels in Yemen have announced that they launched an attack on Israel, reportedly coordinated with their allies Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to military spokesman Yahya Saree, the three parties “launched a barrage of cruise missiles and drones targeting several vital and military sites belonging to the Israeli enemy” on Monday.
The Houthis, who control most of northern Yemen, joined the conflict in support of Iran on March 28. They had previously launched attacks on Israel and targeted shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden during the Israeli war on Gaza. The latest attack is believed to be a show of solidarity with Palestinians.
Israeli officials reported that the bodies of four people killed in an Iranian strike the previous day on a residential building in Haifa had been recovered. Hezbollah’s involvement in the strikes has raised concerns, as Israel continues to pound Lebanon, targeting the Iranian-backed armed group.
The Israeli military declared it was “striking Hezbollah terror targets in Beirut”. Attacks were also reported in Lebanon’s south, including in the Tyre district village of Burj Rahal. The Health Ministry reported four people killed in a raid on a car in Kfar Rumman, near the city of Nabatieh.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has verified 92 attacks on health facilities, medical vehicles, personnel, and warehouses. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO chief, stated that these acts “cannot become the new norm”.
