US Border Czar Announces Shift in Operations Amid Controversy
Tom Homan, the US President’s designated “border czar,” has indicated a shift in immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota, where he was sent to address recent killings of two US citizens by immigration enforcement officers. During a news conference on Thursday, Homan stated that his administration would seek cooperation with local officials, who have opposed the attacks on immigrants and protesters.
Homan attributed the recent escalations to the policies of former President Joe Biden and local officials, suggesting that increased cooperation would lead to less outrage. He reiterated that the Trump administration’s goal is to target individuals posing “public safety threats and national security threats.” The administration has promised to conduct targeted enforcement operations, targeting those who are deemed a threat.
Homan also highlighted a meeting with State Attorney General Keith Ellison, in which he clarified that county jails may notify ICE of release dates for individuals considered public safety risks. It is unclear whether this announcement represents a policy change.
Homan was sent by President Trump to replace the top border patrol official in Minnesota, who was part of a massive enforcement operation that has sparked widespread protests. The recent killings have raised concerns about the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement.
