Humanoid robots showcase martial arts skills at Chinese New Year event

Beijing’s Spring Festival Gala Features Advanced Humanoid Robots

A recent gala event on Lunar New Year’s Eve in Beijing showcased significant advancements in humanoid robotics. The China Spring Festival Gala, broadcast on state broadcaster CGTN, featured a joint martial arts routine performed by 24 humanoid robots.

The performance included several firsts, including the world’s first continuous freestyle table-vaulting parkour, the first aerial flip, and continuous single-leg flips. Other notable moves included a two-step wall-assisted backflip and a 7.5-rotation Airflare grand spin.

Four companies – Unitree, Magiclab, Galbot, and Noetix – partnered with the gala in deals reportedly worth around $14 million. The event marked a significant improvement from last year’s show, which featured simpler robot movements.

Artificial intelligence policy specialist Ramesh Srinivasan noted that Beijing is sending a message about its capabilities to the world, particularly its US rivals. He highlighted China’s rapid progress in humanoid robotics and its potential applications in industrial and agricultural sectors.

Srinivasan also raised questions about the implications of this technology, including its impact on working-class people economically and its potential use on the battlefield. The development of humanoid robots is expected to change various aspects of society, including economics, militancy, and personal relationships.

The event drew nearly half a million views on YouTube, demonstrating its popularity. The partnership between companies and the gala has sparked interest in the future of humanoid robotics.
