A Humpback Whale Calf Rescued and Released into North Sea
A humpback whale calf, nicknamed Timmy due to its repeated stranding off the coast of Germany, has been successfully released back into the wild. The rescue operation, which began as the whale’s health deteriorated, involved transporting Timmy in a specially designed water-filled barge before releasing it into the North Sea.
According to Karin Walter-Mommert, one of the private financiers of the operation, the whale appeared to be swimming freely and in the correct direction upon its release. The GPS transmitter attached to the whale will provide further updates on its journey.
Timmy was first spotted near Germany’s Baltic Sea coast on March 3. Despite efforts to encourage it back into deeper waters, the whale repeatedly became stranded in shallow areas. As a result, its health declined, and experts expressed concerns about its survival prospects.
Several rescue attempts were made, including using inflatable cushions and a pontoon, but none were successful. German officials initially suggested that the whale’s chances of survival had become negligible. However, a private initiative to save Timmy was approved by Germany’s Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state, sparking debate about whether it would be best to let the whale die in peace or attempt to return it to its natural habitat.
The International Whaling Commission noted that each stranding event caused additional harm, making survival increasingly unlikely. However, the use of the special barge ultimately led to Timmy’s successful release into the North Sea. The reasons behind the whale’s initial entry into the Baltic Sea are unclear, with some experts speculating that it may have become disoriented while swimming after a shoal of herring or during migration.
