Rescue Team Releases Humpback Whale Calf into North Sea
A humpback whale calf, nicknamed “Timmy,” has been released back into the wild after a lengthy rescue operation off the coast of Germany. The whale was repeatedly stranded in shallow waters near the Baltic Sea and received extensive media attention due to its repeated stranding incidents.
On Saturday, a team of rescuers transported Timmy on a water-filled barge and released him into the North Sea, approximately 500 miles from his natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Karin Walter-Mommert, one of the private financiers of the operation, the whale appeared to be swimming freely and in the right direction upon release.
Timmy was first spotted near Germany’s Baltic Sea coast on March 3 and repeatedly became stuck in shallow waters despite efforts to encourage him back into deeper water. His health deteriorated significantly due to a skin condition caused by the low salt content of the Baltic Sea, resulting in irregular breathing and minimal movement.
The International Whaling Commission stated that with each stranding causing additional harm, “the chances of survival had become negligible.” However, the use of a special barge ultimately led to Timmy’s successful release. The whale was fitted with a GPS transmitter before his release, which may provide further updates on his journey.
It is unclear why Timmy swam into the Baltic Sea, far from his natural habitat. Experts speculate that he may have lost his way while swimming after a shoal of herring or during migration.
