A Humpback Whale Calf Rescued from Shallow Waters Off Germany’s Coast
A humpback whale calf, nicknamed “Timmy,” was successfully released into the North Sea on Saturday after being stranded in shallow waters off Germany’s Baltic Sea coast for several weeks. The rescue operation, which began as Timmy’s health deteriorated, involved transporting the whale in a specially designed water-filled barge and releasing it off Denmark.
According to Karin Walter-Mommert, one of the private financiers of the operation, Timmy appeared to be swimming freely and in the right direction upon his release. The whale was reportedly fitted with a GPS transmitter before being released, which may provide further updates on its journey.
Timmy was first spotted near Germany’s Baltic Sea coast on March 3 and repeatedly became stuck in shallow waters despite efforts to encourage him back to deeper sea. His health deteriorated significantly, causing experts to express concerns about his survival prospects. Several attempts to rescue the whale were unsuccessful, leading German officials to suggest that he may not have survived.
A private initiative to save Timmy was later approved by Germany’s Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state, which sparked debate among experts and the public about whether it would be best to let him die in peace or attempt to return him to his natural habitat. The International Whaling Commission had previously stated that with each stranding causing additional harm, “the chances of survival [had become] negligible.”
The use of the special barge ultimately led to Timmy’s successful release into the North Sea, where he is now expected to swim towards the Norwegian coast and eventually reach his natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean.
