Database Reveals Extent of Crackdown on Solidarity Movement in UK
A new public database launched by the European Legal Support Center (ELSC) has documented 964 incidents of alleged anti-Palestinian repression in the United Kingdom from January 2019 to August 2025. The database, titled “Index of Repression,” is a compilation of cases involving students being investigated over their solidarity, activists being arrested, employees facing disciplinary procedures, and artists having their events cancelled.
The ELSC collaborated with researchers at Forensic Architecture to verify the cases, which include instances where pro-Israel organizations, journalists, and media outlets were involved. One documented case involves a University of Warwick student who was reported to police for carrying a sign that drew parallels between Israel and Nazi Germany during a campus rally in November 2023.
The database also includes cases involving football clubs’ kit managers being dismissed after posting their views on social media, as well as a University of Manchester student whose visa was revoked by the Home Office after expressing support for Palestine. The ELSC has stated that these incidents represent a “systematic effort” to repress the country’s solidarity movement.
The database is open to the public and aims to provide a sample of the widespread pattern of repression. According to Amira Abdelhamid, director of research and monitoring at the ELSC, the goal of this analysis is to denaturalize the process of repression.
