Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban faces uncertain future in upcoming election

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Party Faces Uncertain Outcome in Parliamentary Election

In Sunday’s parliamentary election, Hungarian voters will decide between stability and change, with around eight million people casting their ballots among a population of nearly 10 million. The latest polls indicate that Peter Magyar, Orban’s centre-right contender, is comfortably ahead of the incumbent prime minister’s Fidesz party.

Magyar’s Tisza party has been attracting large crowds of supporters, who are seeking change from Orban’s rule. A visit by US Vice President JD Vance to Budapest this week, along with an endorsement by President Donald Trump, did not significantly impact the outcome. Instead, it may have cost Orban votes due to public frustration over the Iran war and resulting price rises.

Orban has been addressing his supporters, calling on them to continue campaigning until the last moment. However, some long-time Fidesz supporters are now supporting Magyar, citing concerns about the healthcare system and corruption within the government. Marta Bognar, a former supporter of Orban, is now campaigning for Magyar in her hometown of Sumeg.

Magyar’s campaign promises include restoring ties with the European Union and returning frozen $18 billion to Brussels. He also supports anti-immigration measures but has vowed to address issues related to corruption and rule of law. The outcome of the election is uncertain due to Hungary’s complex electoral system, which includes both constituency-based seats and party-list representation.

On voting day, hundreds of volunteers will be stationed at polling stations around the country to monitor for any election fraud. Orban’s supporters are confident that he will win, citing his support for young families and his ability to address social issues. However, the outcome remains uncertain, with many factors influencing the final result.
