Hungary’s Opposition Party Wins Landslide Victory in Parliamentary Elections
Early results from Sunday’s parliamentary elections have projected opposition party Tisza as the winner, with leader Peter Magyar’s party taking 52.49% of the vote and Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party securing 38.83%. Orban conceded defeat on Sunday night, stating that while all results were not in yet, the situation was “unstandable and clear”.
Orban congratulated Magyar on his success, saying he had acknowledged the responsibility and possibility of governing. Meanwhile, international leaders have reacted to the election results, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulating Magyar and expressing support for a strong, secure Europe.
President Emmanuel Macron also spoke to Magyar to congratulate him on his victory, welcoming the democratic process and Hungary’s attachment to European values. Prime Minister Jonas Garre Stoere described Magyar’s success as “great importance” to Europe, looking forward to cooperation in pursuing peace and stability.
Other leaders, including President Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Kristen Michal, also congratulated Magyar on his victory, highlighting the significance of Hungary’s choice for a free and strong country within a united Europe. The European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen hailed Magyar’s victory as a return to Hungary’s European path, stating that “Europe has always chosen Hungary” and that together they are stronger.
The results mark a significant shift in Hungarian politics, with Orban having led the country for 16 years.
