Hungary’s New Government Pledges Reforms and EU Cooperation
Peter Magyar, the newly elected prime minister-in-waiting of Hungary, has outlined his plans for the country’s future. Following a landslide victory in elections, Magyar’s Tisza party has unseated Viktor Orban’s Fidesz after 16 years of rule.
Magyar stated that he will introduce anti-corruption reforms, including the establishment of new offices to investigate suspected incidents and oversee government spending. He also pledged to restore relations with the European Union and implement domestic reforms.
The constitutional amendment means that Orban will be prevented from returning as prime minister. Magyar criticized Orban’s regime for its handling of corruption allegations, stating that he had a “great opportunity” to do good but instead abused his power.
Magyar expressed commitment to both the EU and NATO, describing them as key guarantees of peace. He reiterated that Hungary will remain committed to these organizations and pursue a cooperative approach with the EU while defending national interests.
The new government hopes to unlock around 18 billion euros in EU funds and a 90-billion-euro loan to Ukraine. Magyar’s approach to Kyiv is unclear, with some statements suggesting he will press Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to end the killing in Ukraine, while others indicate that fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession to EU membership is not supported.
Magyar also touched on relations with the United States and Donald Trump, stating that the US is an important partner and that he would strive for good relations. He called on Hungary’s President Tamas Sulyok to ensure a smooth transfer of power.
The focus now shifts to Magyar and how he will lead the country of nine million people.
