Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban Concedes Defeat in Parliamentary Election

Budapest, Hungary - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has conceded defeat in the country’s parliamentary election, according to partial official results. The Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar, is projected to win a landslide victory with 52.49 percent of the vote.

Magyar congratulated Orban on his loss, stating that he had called to express his congratulations. Orban also released a statement, saying that he had congratulated the victorious party and would continue to serve the Hungarian nation from opposition.

The partial count showed Tisza ahead in 95 of Hungary’s 106 constituencies, with the party projected to win more than 130 mandates in the 199-seat parliament. A comfortable two-thirds majority is expected, which would allow Magyar’s party to amend Hungary’s constitution.

Turnout for the election was high, with over 77 percent of voters casting ballots by 6:30pm local time. This marks a record number of participants in any election in Hungary’s post-Communist history.
