Hurdles to Implementing Phase Two of Gaza Ceasefire Remain Uncertain

US Announces Progress in Gaza Peace Plan

The US has confirmed that it is moving forward with its 20-point peace plan for Gaza, which includes disarmament and reconstruction efforts. According to a statement by US President Donald Trump, the country has entered the second phase of the plan.

As part of this phase, the US plans to negotiate with Hamas on handing over its weapons. The US has warned that failure to comply with these demands could result in consequences for the group.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the US announcement as largely symbolic, suggesting that it may not lead to significant changes in Israel’s commitments under the plan.

Experts have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of transitioning to the next phase of the plan. Xavier Abu Eid, a political analyst and former adviser to the Palestine Liberation Organization negotiation team, notes that Hamas’s willingness to disarm is uncertain.

Yezid Sayigh, senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center, also questions whether Israel will fulfill its commitments under the plan. Yossi Beilin, former Israeli justice minister, has expressed concerns about the potential impact of the US announcement on the peace process.

The details of the US-Gaza peace plan remain unclear, and it is too early to determine whether the transition to the next phase can be achieved.
