India and Pakistan reportedly consider restarting diplomatic talks

Indian and Pakistani Leaders Remain Divided on Dialogue

In an interview with an Indian news agency, Dattatreya Hosabale, general secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a prominent Hindu nationalist organization, suggested that India should engage in dialogue with Pakistan. Hosabale stated that New Delhi should not close its doors to discussions, sparking controversy among Indian politicians.

The comments were met with skepticism by the opposition, who pointed out the contrast between Hosabale’s views and those of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. The Modi administration has repeatedly stated that “terror and talks cannot go together,” opposing any dialogue with Pakistan, which India accuses of supporting militant groups in Kashmir and Indian cities.

Pakistan welcomed Hosabale’s comments, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stating that Islamabad would wait to see if there was an official response from India. Over a week later, the Modi government has yet to formally respond to Hosabale’s call for dialogue.

Other prominent voices in India have backed Hosabale’s position, leading some to speculate that New Delhi may be preparing to restart formal engagement with Pakistan. Analysts note that while there is growing support for diplomatic engagement between the two nations, reviving a full-fledged dialogue will be challenging.

Former Indian army chief General Manoj Naravane has also expressed support for Hosabale’s views, stating that friendship between peoples can improve relations between states. Pakistani diplomat Jauhar Saleem pointed out that several unofficial meetings have taken place between former officials and parliamentarians from both sides since the 2025 war.

The RSS is closely tied to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been in power for years. Analysts suggest that Hosabale’s comments may be an attempt by the BJP to gain political cover, as the party has boxed itself into a corner with its anti-Pakistan rhetoric.
