India condemns comment made by former US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump’s Truth Social account shared a comment by conservative radio host Michael Savage, describing India as a “hellhole”. The statement was later reposted without comment by Trump. Savage made the remark while criticizing US birthright citizenship, stating that babies born in the US become citizens and bring their families from countries like China or India.

In response, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the comment as “uninformed” and “in poor taste”. The statement does not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which is based on mutual respect and shared interests. According to the US Embassy in New Delhi, Trump has referred to India as a “great country with a very good friend at the top”.

The comment was met with criticism from Indian opposition party Congress, who described it as “extremely insulting and anti-India”. The party called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to register a strong objection with the US President. Nearly 5.5 million people of Indian origin live in the US, making them one of the largest groups of Asian origin.

Savage’s comment also mentioned that there is little loyalty among immigrant communities coming to the US today, compared to European Americans and their ancestors. Trump has previously used insulting language to refer to foreign nations and immigrant communities. In 2018, he made headlines for referring to El Salvador, Haiti, and African nations as “s**thole countries”.
