India hosts global summit to discuss artificial intelligence with world leaders

UN Chief Calls for Open Access to Artificial Intelligence, Warns Against Concentration of Power

A global artificial intelligence summit in India is underway, bringing together world leaders to discuss the rapid advancement of the technology. The event, which began on Thursday, marks the fourth international AI meeting since 2023 and features high-profile attendees such as UN chief Antonio Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Guterres emphasized the need for open access to artificial intelligence, stating that its future cannot be left to “the whims of a few billionaires.” He called on tech leaders to support a $3 billion global fund to ensure equal access to the technology. Macron also spoke about the importance of regulation, saying that Europe aims to strike a balance between innovation and safety.

The summit has been attended by thousands of people, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who withdrew from speaking due to concerns over his ties to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Another representative from the Gates Foundation will take his place.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted recent AI model launches by Indian companies, stating that “the AI model which succeeds in India can be deployed all over the world.” He emphasized the importance of sharing and open access to AI technology, saying that it is only when its core systems are accessible that young minds can contribute to making it better and safer.

The summit has also been seen as an opportunity for India to boost its position in the AI sector. Last year, the country ranked third in a global ranking of AI competitiveness. However, experts note that India still has a long way to go before it can rival other countries like the United States and China.
