India Hosts Artificial Intelligence Summit Amid Global Focus on Governance and Collaboration
The Indian government is hosting an artificial intelligence summit this week, bringing together heads of state and tech executives to discuss key issues related to AI. The five-day event, which began on Monday with the inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to declare a “shared roadmap for global AI governance and collaboration.”
French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are among the world leaders attending the summit. Other notable attendees include Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and AMI Labs Executive Chairman Yann LeCun.
The summit is expected to feature discussions on job disruption, child safety, and other pressing concerns related to AI. The Indian government has touted the event as an opportunity for India to project itself as a bridge between advanced economies and the Global South. Officials say that India’s experience in building large-scale digital public infrastructure offers a model for deploying AI at scale while keeping costs low.
The summit is expected to focus on three key themes: “people, progress, planet.” While there are no plans for a joint binding political agreement, the event may result in a nonbinding pledge or declaration on goals for AI development. The Indian government has emphasized the importance of responsible AI use and its potential impact on humanity.
The summit comes at a pivotal moment as AI rapidly transforms economies, reshapes labor markets, and raises questions around regulations, security, and ethics.
