India Workers Protest Over Rising Living Costs and Wages

Protesters in Noida’s Industrial Area Clash with Police

A protest by factory workers in the Indian city of Noida turned violent on its fourth day, prompting a police response involving tear gas shells. The incident occurred amid rising global living costs, which have been linked to the US-Israel war on Iran and its impact on fuel supplies.

Dozens of protesters marched through the streets, chanting slogans and demanding changes from their employers. Security personnel in riot gear observed the scene, while others attempted to break through barricades. Vehicles were also seen being overturned, with flames rising from some of them.

Local authorities have stated that “minimum force” was used to maintain law and order. A lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh has called on protesters to discuss their demands with the government. The Gautam Budh Nagar police department released a statement saying that senior officials are making efforts to counsel workers and urge them to maintain peace.

Noida is home to thousands of industrial units, including those in the automotive sector. Protests in neighboring Haryana last week led to a 35% increase in minimum wages for workers. One protester, Vinay Mahoti, stated his demands, which include fixed duty hours, paid overtime hours, and adherence to federal guidelines.

The incident highlights the impact of global events on local industries and worker protests.
