Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Israel on Wednesday, marking the first time an Indian leader addressed the Knesset, or parliament. During his speech, Modi expressed strong support for Israel, stating that India stands by the country “with full conviction.” He also condemned the October 7 attack by Hamas-led fighters as “barbaric” and added that no cause can justify the murder of civilians.
Modi’s visit was met with a standing ovation from the Knesset, where he received Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu thanked India for its support in the wake of the October 7 attack and described Modi as “more than a friend, a brother.” The two leaders discussed common interests and shared goals, including the Gaza peace initiative approved by the UN Security Council.
India has expressed strong support for the Gaza peace initiative, which Modi described as offering a pathway to a just and durable peace for all people in the region. He also highlighted the importance of India-Israel relations, describing them as “vital” for trade and security. The two countries have strengthened their ties in recent years, with India becoming Israel’s largest arms buyer.
Modi’s visit comes amid criticism of his support for Israel, particularly during its conflict with Palestinians in Gaza. However, Modi has maintained that no cause can justify the murder of civilians. He continues his visit to Israel on Thursday, where he will engage with Israeli officials and leaders.
