Pakistan Seeks Diplomatic Balance Amid India’s Efforts to Isolate It
In a recent development, Pakistan has found itself in a strategic position where it is being courted by multiple international players, including US President Donald Trump and China. Despite India’s efforts to isolate it, Pakistan remains a key player in regional diplomacy.
On September 2016, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Kerala, stating that India would intensify its efforts to isolate Pakistan and warning the Pakistani leaders that the sacrifice of 18 Indian soldiers would not go in vain. However, over the past decade, Pakistan has maintained strong ties with China and has reemerged as a trusted partner of the US under President Trump.
Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have both visited Trump at the White House, and Islamabad is currently serving as the principal mediator between the US and Iran amid their ongoing conflict. Trump has frequently praised the Pakistani leadership, which analysts attribute to Pakistan’s success in wooing him.
However, some analysts argue that India’s strategy of isolating Pakistan has backfired, citing Modi’s administration as a key factor. The Indian Prime Minister had cultivated a personal rapport with Trump but chose not to comment on the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May 2025, which was brokered by the US president.
The conflict between India and Pakistan erupted after Indian military attacks on “terror” sites deep inside Pakistani territory, in response to an attack that killed 26 tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. Trump’s attempts to portray himself as a peacemaker between New Delhi and Islamabad were seen as troubling by India, which has long insisted that its disputes with Pakistan are strictly bilateral.
In June, Modi declined Trump’s invitation to visit Washington, opting instead to speak with the US president over the phone. The two leaders had previously met in the Oval Office just months earlier. Despite this, the tit-for-tat claims surrounding the May truce continued, with both sides accusing each other of making concessions.
Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts have been bolstered by its ability to capitalize on key geopolitical events and secure support from major powers. As a result, Pakistan has emerged as an important player in regional diplomacy, while India’s strategy of isolating it has had the opposite effect.
