Indias Left-Wing Government Falls After Five Decades in Power

India’s Kerala State Sees Leftist Parties Sweeped from Power

In a recent state election, the leftist parties in Kerala, India have failed to secure power for the first time since 2016. The United Democratic Front, led by the Congress party, has won or is leading in 98 seats out of 140 in the legislature, according to early results. The Left Democratic Front, an alliance of left-wing parties, has secured 35 seats.

Kerala was once a stronghold for leftist politics and ideology, with the Communist Party of India (CPI) holding power from April 1957 to July 1959. Since then, at least one Indian state has been ruled by the left. However, this trend appears to have come to an end.

According to political scientists, the left’s influence in India has been declining steadily since the 2004 election, when they secured 62 seats in parliament. This number has decreased to just eight seats in recent parliamentary elections.

Rajarshi Dasgupta, an assistant professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, notes that the left’s presence was limited to specific regions and industrial areas, particularly in North India. He attributes this to the party’s inability to address issues of caste and gender, as well as the changing nature of capitalism after liberalization.

Harish Vasudevan, an independent social activist, suggests that the right-wing ideology is gaining favor in India. However, he also notes that the left has partially lost its leftist ideology.

The results of this election mark a significant shift in Indian politics, with no state currently ruled by the left.
