Indian State Elections: BJP Expected to Win Two Crucial States
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is projected to win two key states in the recent state elections. According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP is leading in 176 out of 294 seats in West Bengal, a state where the party has never governed before.
The BJP’s expected victory in West Bengal is seen as a significant boost for Modi’s government, which has faced economic and foreign policy challenges, including high unemployment rates and pending trade deals. The ruling party has campaigned extensively in West Bengal, focusing on issues such as “illegal immigration” from Bangladesh and the state’s local economy.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal, a key member of India’s opposition alliance, has been critical of Modi and has maintained that her party will win. However, trends released by the Election Commission show the BJP leading in many seats.
In other states, such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the BJP is also expected to perform well. In Tamil Nadu, movie star Joseph Vijay’s new party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is on course to oust the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party.
The results of these state elections are significant for Modi’s government, which has been under pressure since US President Donald Trump’s tariffs and the war in Iran. The BJP’s expected victory in West Bengal will bolster its ability to tackle these challenges.
The Election Commission of India is set to release official results on Tuesday.
