Indias Virat Kohli surpasses Sachin Tendulkar as worlds second-highest run-scorer

Virat Kohli Surpasses Kumar Sangakkara as India’s Second-Highest Run-Scorer

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has surpassed Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest scorer across all formats of international cricket, with 28,068 runs in Test, ODI, and T20 cricket. This achievement comes after Kohli’s match-winning knock of 93 in the first one-day international (ODI) against New Zealand.

Kohli now trails his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record with 34,357 runs. The top-order batter achieved this milestone since making his debut for India in an ODI in Sri Lanka in 2008.

In the recent match, Kohli’s 91-ball knock helped India chase down a victory target of 301 with four wickets and six balls to spare, leading the three-match series 1-0. However, he missed out on his 54th ODI century after registering his fifth 50-plus score in as many ODI innings.

Kohli has spoken about his approach to the game, stating that he aims to make the most of the first 20 deliveries after coming in at first drop and counterattacking early in his innings. He believes this approach would have been more aggressive had India not been chasing.

The 37-year-old now only plays the ODI format, following the retirement of fellow stalwart Rohit Sharma from T20 and Test cricket. Kohli’s future plans include targeting the ODI World Cup in 2027.
