Indonesia and US Sign Major Defence Cooperation Agreement

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has signed a defense partnership agreement with Indonesia, marking a significant development in bilateral relations between the two countries.

The agreement was announced during a meeting at the Pentagon, where Hegseth met with Indonesian Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. According to a statement from the US Department of Defense, the partnership aims to strengthen regional deterrence and advance shared commitments to peace through strength.

Hegseth stated that the partnership signifies the strength and potential of the security relationship between Washington and Jakarta. He also noted that both countries’ armed forces participate in over 170 military exercises together each year.

The joint statement accompanying the agreement outlined plans for co-development of sophisticated asymmetric capabilities, next-generation defense technologies, and improvements to operational readiness.

This development comes after reports emerged on Sunday suggesting that the US is seeking “blanket” overflight access for military aircraft through Indonesian airspace. The Indonesian Ministry of Defence has clarified that discussions are ongoing regarding a proposal to grant such access, but emphasized that any agreements would be subject to Indonesian law and sovereignty.

The signing of the partnership follows a meeting between Hegseth and Sjamsoeddin on Monday, where they discussed various defense cooperation initiatives. The agreement is seen as an important step in strengthening ties between the two countries, with implications for regional stability in the Asia Pacific region.
